Living in Florida, keeping things cool is practically a full-time Dad job.

Our shed holds everything from Christmas decorations to baby gear, and grabbing a storage bin shouldn’t count as a sauna session.

In this Black and Decker portable AC review, I swapped a small window unit for a portable model to cool our 225-square-foot shed. It was my first rodeo with portable AC, and between the tiny window and questions about drainage, I had some figuring out to do.

Here’s what you need to know before purchasing one yourself!

My Quick Video Review

Here’s my video review of the Black and Decker Portable Air Conditioner (9,000 BTU):

Watch me unbox the unit, tackle our unusually small shed window, connect the exhaust hose, and walk through the controls, Follow Me remote, and drainage options.

Other awesome household products

Here are a few other things to help a Dad out:

  • 30% Vinegar. Upgrade your basic household vinegar; see my review of Harris 30% Vinegar — excellent cleaner and DIY weed killer!
  • Dual trash can (trash AND recyclables). The SONGMICS dual trash can is incredibly functional, family-friendly, and not an eyesore.

Pros and Cons

Here’s a quick breakdown of what Dad liked and some critical things to know about the Black & Decker portable air conditioner.

What I Liked

  1. Seriously cold air. It’s done a great job cooling our approximately 225-square-foot Florida shed.
  2. Follow Me remote. I like being able to use the temperature near the remote to guide cooling.
  3. Three useful operating modes. Cooling, fan-only operation, and dehumidification give me options for different conditions.
  4. Mostly straightforward installation. The hose connections were simple; our tiny window caused most of the extra work.
  5. Wheels and side handles. Moving the unit around the shed was easy, even though ours will mostly stay in one spot.

Dad’s Honest Callouts

  1. Portable still means vented: You need a suitable way to send the hot exhaust air outdoors.
  2. Small windows can require extra work: I had to trim the window panel using an oscillating saw to fit our unusually narrow opening.
  3. Know the drainage and heating limitations: Continuous drainage relies on gravity, and this BPACT08WT model does not include heat.

Quick Verdict

I’ve been really pleased with this Black and Decker portable AC unit. It blows very cold air, keeps our shed comfortable, and has controls that were easy to figure out. The window panel took some customization, but that was largely a challenge with our shed.

Top Amazon Reviews

Don’t just take my word for it — here’s what other Amazon buyers commonly mention about the BLACK+DECKER portable air conditioner.

  • “Straightforward setup” – Buyers frequently describe installation as easy, making setup one of the more consistently positive themes in the feedback.
  • “Cooling results vary” – Some owners praise its cooling performance, while others report disappointing results or units that don’t cool properly.
  • “Noise gets mixed reactions” – Some buyers find it surprisingly quiet, while others consider it too loud—a consideration if you’re planning to use it in a bedroom or office.

Unboxing — What’s Inside?

Unboxing was simple. There weren’t dozens of mysterious pieces to spread across the floor while pretending I definitely knew where everything went.

Here’s what I showed in my video:

  • BLACK+DECKER portable AC unit
  • Exhaust hose and connecting adapters
  • Adjustable window panels
  • Small clips that secure the window panel pieces
  • Remote control
  • Foam sealing materials
  • Drain hose

Tip: keep an eye on those little window panel clips while unpacking. I didn’t need them for my shortened panel, but they’re easy to lose in the box.

Specifications

  • Brand: BLACK+DECKER
  • Model: BPACT08WT
  • Color: White
  • Listed cooling capacity: 9,000 BTU; 5,300 BTU SACC
  • Advertised room coverage: Up to 400 square feet
  • Operating modes: Air conditioning, fan, and dehumidifier
  • Remote: Follow Me temperature-sensing remote
  • Heating: Not included in the selected 9,000 BTU version

The advertised coverage is a sizing reference. My experience here is specifically with our roughly 225-square-foot shed.

Dad’s 5 Key Features

Here are the five features that stood out while installing this portable AC and using it to cool our Florida shed.

1. Cold Air That Made a Difference in Our Shed

The first thing I noticed was how cold the air felt coming out of this unit. We replaced an existing window AC, so I wanted something that could actually handle the shed. In our roughly 225-square-foot space, it’s done the job thus far.

2. Window Installation with Straightforward Hose Connections

If you’re wondering how to install a Black and Decker portable AC, most of my setup involved fitting the window panel, adding the foam seals, and connecting the exhaust hose. The adapters clicked into place easily. Our tiny shed window was the main obstacle: the panel was too large in either orientation, so I trimmed it with an oscillating saw.

Dad Tip: Measure your window before starting, and check the gap between the sashes after fitting the panel. I added foam there to help seal the opening.

3. A Thermostat and Follow Me Remote

One question I had before using this AC was whether it had a thermostat. I wanted to set a temperature and let the unit manage cooling, rather than babysit the controls. The Follow Me feature adds another useful option: with it activated, the remote’s temperature sensor helps guide cooling from its location. I placed mine across the shed to try it out.

4. Dehumidification and Practical Drainage Options

Living in Florida, I paid attention to where the condensation goes. This unit has automatic water evaporation, a manual drain, and a hose connection for continuous gravity drainage. During filming, I hadn’t seen a full-water warning, so I can’t promise how often your setup will need draining. Humidity and operating conditions matter, and a collection bucket still needs regular checking.

Dad Tip: Plan a downhill route for continuous drainage. There’s no built-in pump to send water up through a window, and the receiving container needs to sit below the drain outlet.

5. Wheels, Handles, and Flexible Operating Modes

The wheels made it easy to reposition the unit while I worked on installation, and the side handles gave me somewhere useful to grip. Ours will mostly stay put, but I appreciate that flexibility. Cooling, fan-only, and dehumidifier modes also give it several uses. Just remember that relocating it for AC operation means arranging an outdoor exhaust connection again.

Dad’s Final Thoughts

Fun fact: Modern air conditioning got its start helping a printing company — not cooling people. In 1902, Willis Carrier developed a system to control humidity that was causing magazine pages to wrinkle at a Brooklyn printing plant.

The real win here is making one more part of our home better. Sometimes Dad projects are big renovations; sometimes they’re making sure humidity and heat don’t destroy our beloved Christmas decorations. This BLACK+DECKER portable AC has been a worthwhile upgrade for our shed.
