Dad’s video studio had reached the camping-light stage of improvisation.
I wanted better lighting at my desk, especially for my face, the wall behind me, and products I hold up on camera. This Torjim Softbox Lighting Kit review covers setting up the 16-inch version and trying it alongside my existing ring light and lamp.
I’m learning as I go, so I wanted something straightforward. In my first test, I assembled the light, tried its warm and cool settings, and adjusted the brightness from my chair. The improvement made me pretty happy to retire that makeshift camping-light arrangement.
My Quick Video Review
Here’s a quick video review of the Torjim Softbox Lighting Kit. I show the assembly, switch the light on and off at my desk, and demonstrate the remote’s color and brightness adjustments.

Pros and Cons
Here’s a quick breakdown of what Dad liked, and what can be improved about this compact softbox light.
What I Liked
- Noticeably brighter video. Switching it on made my face and the item I held toward the camera look much better illuminated in my setup.
- Straightforward assembly. Attaching the lamp to the stand and opening the softbox was simple enough for this lighting beginner.
- A forgiving diffuser cover. The stretchy edges wrapped around the corners, with Velcro fastening on all four sides.
- Warm light that suited my room. I could choose a warmer look to work with the lamp already on my desk.
- Adjustments from my chair. The remote let me change brightness and modes without walking back to the light.
Dad’s Honest Callouts
- Bring AAA batteries. My remote didn’t come with them. Having batteries ready would make that first setup a little smoother.
- The light still needs positioning. I had to consider the angle, brightness, and existing lights; simply switching it on wasn’t the whole setup process.
- My test was in a small workspace. The 16-inch version worked for my desk, but I haven’t tested larger rooms or long-term durability.
Quick Verdict
I’d recommend the Torjim Softbox Lighting Kit to a Dad getting started with video lighting in a smaller workspace. Assembly was easy, the remote made adjustments convenient, and the warm setting fit the look I wanted. It improved my existing ring-light-and-lamp setup enough that I was already thinking about replacing the ring light with another softbox.

Dad’s 5 Key Features
Here are the five features that stood out while I assembled this softbox lighting kit and tried it at my filming desk.

1. Assembly That Didn’t Become a Project

I assembled mine on the dining room table before moving it into my filming area. There were only a few connection points: attach the lamp assembly to the tripod, tighten it, and open the folded softbox. I especially liked the diffuser’s stretchy edges. They wrapped around the corners neatly, and the Velcro attached along all four sides without much fuss.

2. Warm and Cool Lighting Choices
My desk already had a lamp with a warm glow, and I wanted the new light to fit that atmosphere. Cycling through the modes made the choice pretty obvious for me: the cooler setting didn’t suit my room, while the brighter white felt more studio-like than I wanted. The warm setting gave me the look I was trying to keep.
Dad Tip: Try the modes with your existing lamps switched on, like I did, so you can judge how the colors work together on camera.
3. Brightness for Fill Light or a Bigger Boost
I took the brightness all the way up and then down during my demonstration. At the minimum, the light was still on but contributed only a little extra illumination. That could be handy when you just want some fill light. For my own desk, I wanted a stronger contribution alongside the ring light, particularly when holding a product up to the camera.
4. A Remote Within Arm’s Reach
Keeping the remote on my desk is one of the most practical parts of this setup. I can sit where I’ll actually record, look toward the camera, and adjust the light from there. Natural light changes depending on when I film, so being able to tweak the brightness without getting up makes the setup feel much easier to live with.

Dad Tip: Make your final brightness adjustments while sitting in your recording position; that’s how I checked the effect on my face and the products I held up.
5. A 16-Inch Size That Worked Beside My Desk
I chose the 16-inch version because my workspace is relatively small. Once assembled and positioned beside the desk, it gave me the extra illumination I wanted without needing a larger softbox for this particular shot. That’s the context for my recommendation: seated videos and handheld product demonstrations. For a bigger table or filming area, I’d consider whether a larger option would make more sense.
Dad’s Final Thoughts
Fun Fact: Early camera traps used trip lines and magnesium lamps that produced an explosive white flash to photograph wildlife. The Smithsonian shares that history—quite a production for one animal photo!
My home video corner is still a work in progress. Getting the camping light out of the filming setup feels like a pretty satisfying step forward for this Dad.
